Fuerza 7: magazine redesign and DTP
A project that has kept us really busy during the latest months has been the redesign and layout/DTP of the nationally distributed windsurf magazine Fuerza 7. In September 2008 the director of the magazine contacted us and explained they were seeking a design studio that would redesign the whole magazine and take over the layout/DTP work for the following issues.

PRODATEC: a corporate identity project
During the first months of 2008 we completed a corporate identity project for a recently created company called Prodatec Consultores S.L.. Prodatec provides services for companies in the fields of consulting, data protection and learning, as well as assistance for quality certification procedures, environmental studies, food safety and corporate insurance.
Tehuti—logo and business card design
It may not be our most known line of work, but Globulart also offers translation services; we have been in touch for some time now with a number of professional translators from all over the world (thank you, twitter!). Several weeks ago a translator asked about the possibility or redesigning her logotype and website, and in a matter of days we started working on her new visual identity.
COFFEEHOUSE - animation for corporate displays
Back in 2008 COFFEEHOUSE asked us to develop an application that would make good use of the two high definition TV screens that were installed there. We created a system that shows promotional messages interspersed with small video sequences or transitions that use an animated version of COFFEEHOUSE’s logotype. The video below shows the venue, [...]
Vinyl LP design for Moon Unit - coincidences in image and sound
Several weeks ago, we received, fresh from the factory, a vinyl LP we designed for the band Moon Unit, based in Almería. The record label Clifford Records encouraged the band to publish an LP in 10-inch vinyl format, for which they composed six songs.

Patent similarities: U2 & Brothomstates album covers
This one will be quick and (for the most part) painless. I read an article about the new album by U2 (wich, by the way, will be released the 27th of February) and it has a paragraph about how revolutionary (*ahem!*) the cover design is, since the name of the band or the title of the album are nowhere to be seen.
Let’s be honest, if you’re a member of the band U2, you won’t care if the album cover doesn’t feature any text at all, people will probably buy them all the same… But! If your band is called Brothomstates, releasing an album with no text at all in the cover is a tad more daring, although in both cases the cover serves the purpose of catching the attention of the potential buyers and make them wonder what that album is. By the way, this particular Brothomstates album is called “Claro“, and it’s worth noting the title of one the songs is “-”. Yes, only a hyphen; now try to beat that, U2!
Is it just me or both covers are actually quite similar? And, while we’re at it, could you tell which is what?
Interview on TV3 - Global Orgasm for Peace 2008
Although this is past news, I believe it’s worth showing here the interview I gave to the TV show El Club, that airs on TV3, the past 18th of December, 2008, just 3 days before the date of the Global Orgasm for Peace 2008.
As a brief reminder before going to the video of the interview, [...]
You’re not my Type
The last 4th of December, 2008, was a different day for designers in Almería: we had a conference and round table discussion on typography coinciding with an exhibition organized by the New York Type Directors Club at the Almería School of Art. The speakers were Silvia Segarra, Paco Fernández, Luis Reyes and Eugenio Jiménez, all of them members of the AAD (Asociación Andaluza de Diseñadores - Andalusian Designers Association), and the subsequent round table had Miguel Ángel Martín as the moderator.
Logo design - a globulart retrospective
After all this time completing graphic design and corporate identity projects at Globulart, we now have a chance to view from a distance how important it is to have a good logotype.
Just below you can see a series of logos in their monochrome versions (graphic designers should ask themselves if the logo they are designing [...]
Poster design for a concert by the band “Profesor Popsnuggle”
We created a promo poster for the official premiere of the new album by the Almería-based band Profesor Popsnuggle, titled “El Fin de las Colonias Africanas” (The End of the African Colonies). They performed at the MADCHESTER POP BAR the 18th of July.
MIMIKRY: contemporary dance, music and realtime video
Mimikry, in english: mimicry. This is the title of the contemporary dance choreography conceived and directed by Anett Wolter (choreographer and dance pedagog, she specializes in contemporary dance and is an old friend of Globulart).
Today we take on this subject, both because we appreciate every form of creative expression and because I played a personal part in this dance piece: by creating an illustration design that has a meaningful part in the representation, aiding with the costume design and even paticipating in the live performance -although no dancing on my part was involved, maybe next time-, creating the live video that goes with the music, lighting and dance. In other words: live video editing.
That tune in the WWDC 08 keynote
Truth be said, I don’t know if anyone has wondered what song could be heard in the video that Steve Jobs played during the keynote address for the WWDC 2008, which showed what some big corporations think of the iPhone. It doesn’t hurt to tell about that song, though, just in case it caught someone else’s attention.
For a little perspective, Apple is finishing a system for distributing naitve applications for the iPhone, and, to that effect, and with the occasion of the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2008), Steve Jobs introduced a video in which high executives of a number of companies (even from the U.S. Army) talked about the benefits of creating software for the iPhone. Said video had a background music that sounded very, very familiar to me…
Raiders of the lost Brand
Today I am re-reading an article in the above URL, only in the printed version of El País, and the question comes to my mind automatically: differences aside, is there a list of the most valuable brands that are Made in Andalucía? What’s more, are there brands that are Made in Almería? Do they even exist? What I mean is… once a brand or company is entered in the Register of Companies, and has operated at a local, regional, national, european or even global scale, are those brands known outside our local sphere? There’s the evidence of companies from Almería in global markets such as agriculture or marble, but are their products recognized and noticed because they carry a specific brand and because they are produced in Almería?
Turning an apparent problem into an advantage
The words “crisis” and “recession” have taken on a life of their own; you read them in the newspapers, hear them on the radio, one can almost taste them. It is during such times that creativity becomes more important and companies have to make a greater investment in advertising to stay afloat and prosper.
Take this case: during the 1960s people complained that Heinz ketchup took too long to pour out of the bottle, and competing products seemed easier and more convenient to use. The evident choice would have been to study whether the problem was in the design of the bottle or in the formula of the product; but that would mean facing the competition in a conventional fashion and in their same ground. Instead of that, they pushed conventional thinking aside and [...]
Poster and billboard for World Breast Cancer Day 2007
It was the last quarter of 2007, and a special opportunity arose; it meant collaborating with the AECC - Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer (Spanish Association Against Cancer), which was organizing a fashion show for the World Breast Cancer Day in which the models would be women who had overcome breast cancer; as a company, we had been wanting to participate in these kind of pro bono projects, so we accepted and got to work.

Flyers and brochures: print design for Acanto, an art Gallery
It is a delight, writing a post about Galería Acanto, one of our best and most loyal customers, about whom we only have nice words to say. As a background, Galería Acanto is a business based in Almería, and is a frame workshop and a contemporary art gallery. Our professional relationship with them dates back to at least the year 2000, so they have witnessed our own history as a design studio. During these years we have done plenty of work for them, from their corporate website to their graphic communication designing posters, flyers and brochures.
Logo and print design for imago diagnostic
We’re back to the past, this time going back to early 2006. This work came from Madrid, there was this new company called imago diagnostic, devoted to providing hospitals with solutions for remote radiology diagnosis; the company has a system that allows radiologists to work from home using a high resolution terminal to perform a diagnosis from images obtained from the patient in a hospital in the world. This new commission started with such interesting premise; our task was to create a logo for the company as well as business cards and a presentation (done in Flash) as a support to their commercial process.
Corporate identity project: COFFEEHOUSE

The birth of this project dates back to the end of 2006, when a new client came along; he had previous experience in catering and he wanted to open a lounge bar in Almería. The new place would need a complete visual identity, interior design included.
Farewell, Arthur C. Clarke; so long, Anthony Minghella
How sad it is to report this; the creative genius that was Arthur C. Clarke, science fiction writer, died today at the age of 90. Clarke was responsible for some of the most famous books in the genre, such as “Rendezvous with Rama” and the sensational short story “The Sentinel”, which later led to the [...]
